Registration

The Conference is open to any university student in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area who has recently returned from study abroad.

If received by September 21st, the earlybird registration fee for the conference is $10.00; afterwards, the registration fee is $15. This fee covers lunch, registration materials, as well as workshop sessions and the resource fair.

What to bring: Bring your university ID, a few copies of your resume and a copy of your registration confirmation.

What to wear: This is a casual event.

Program

Students will have opportunities to meet with other students in the DC area who studied abroad in a similar region. There will be opportunities to share and reflect on their study abroad experiences as well as the return to life in the United States.

The keynote speaker of this year's event will be Ray Leki. Ray Leki is the Director of the Transition Center at the Foreign Service Institute of the United States Department of State. The Transition Center is a worldwide leader in preparing diplomats, government employees, and family members for assignments overseas, as well as those transitioning from a post overseas back to the United States. Throughout his career, he has designed and implemented training programs on a variety of issues, including overseas security, crisis management, and cross cultural effectiveness.

Mr. Leki started his career in international service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal, where taught science and mathematics. He is the author of Travel Wise: How to be Safe, Savvy and Secure Overseas. He also serves as an adjunct professor at American University’s Intercultural Management Institute.

Participants will be able to explore different options available after graduation with professionals and practitioners. Some of the panel topics include:

  • International Service panelists: Embassy of Spain, Habitat for Humanity, Peace Corps
  • International Careers – Public Sector panelists: Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), US State Department
  • International Careers – Private Sector panelists: Brookings Institution and more
  • Further International Study panelists: British Council, Elliott School of International Affairs, School for International Training
  • Entering International Education (as a Profession) panelists: Catholic University, CET Academic Programs
Career service professionals will be on-hand to offer free, one-on-one résumé critiquing appointments to students. Be sure to bring your résumé and sign up for these appointments when you pick up your registration packet in the morning. The slots will fill up fast!

Photo Contest

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place winners! Students may submit up to two original 8x10 photographs to their study abroad offices by September 24th. Conference attendees will vote for the best photos and prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the fair.

International Opportunities Fair

What are you doing after graduation? This fair will introduce you to representatives from international organizations, educational institutions and career representatives. These organizations can help open doors to your future international endeavors. We are planning the 2008 International Opportunities fair and seeking raffle prizes. Check back for updates in the coming weeks!

2007 Participating Organizations may include: Central Intelligence Agency, CET Academic Programs, CIEE Teach Abroad, Cross-Cultural Solutions, Peace Corps, SIT Graduate School, i-to-i, the Spanish Embassy, and more!
