The January Term in Beijing Four-Week Intensive Program for Intermediate and Advanced Learners
Since 1992, CET has operated the four-week January Term in Beijing for intermediate and advanced students at the campus of the Beijing Chinese Language program. The curriculum, designed for students who have studies at least three semesters of college-level Chinese, emphasizes the link between inside classroom study and outside language use. All students live with Chinese roommates and abide by a full-time language pledge. This program is an excellent way to "warm up" for the longer spring term that follows.
Curriculum During the four-week Janterm, students take 25 hours per week of classes, including reading, grammar, small group drill, one-on-one tutorials and language practica. Weekly-themed practica assignments help students increase their contact with local Chinese. Students interview locals or visit certain sites and then report on their findings in the classroom. While speaking and listening skills are emphasized, reading and writing skills are also covered.
Four levels are offered--intermediate, high intermediate, advanced and high advanced--and classes move at a rapid pace, typically covering one lesson per day. Students take daily quizzes and weekly tests, and are expected to spend about four hours per day listening to recorded materials, preparing new vocabulary, reviewing the previous day's material and completing writing assignments.
